Australian Open 2003-2008
Back To List

The Australian Open - the Grand Slam of Asia and the Pacific, is the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, and is one of Australia's most prestigious sporting events.

TSG was called upon to be the official on-court signage provider for the 2003 Australian Open, supplying digitally printed and cut vinyl standard and framed banner and coreflute signs.

Following the success of this collaborative effort between TSG and the Australian Open, the team were then assigned the challenge to design and construct an interally illuminated signage system for Rod Laver Arena for the 2004 and 2005 events.

The challenge was to design a signage system that would adequately display sponsorship signage under all environmental conditions - day and night.   Factors effecting the design and construction of the system included:

  • The signs ability to withstand the impact of tennis balls, racquets and Melbourne's varied weather conditions.
  • Signage needed to include a self-supporting structure to cope with the temporary seating located at the Southern end of the arena.
  • The signage design needed to incorporate the travelling camera and new commentary boxes at the Northern end of the arena.
  • The illuminated signage could not be distracting for the players, but bright enough to be seen by spectators and a television audience. The signage also had to incorporate a feature that allowed staff to change the degree of illumination depending upon court conditions.
  • Illuminated signage needed to accurately portray the correct colours of all sponsor logos and provide sufficient exposure for sponsors of the event.

The Signcraft Group was delighted to not only be able to provide, in a Grand Slam first, a modular flex face signage system incorporating curved faces, aluminium boxes and electrical dimmable ballasts to produce backlit signage for the 2004 and 2005 tournaments, but has since been able to consistently supply the necessary on-court signage and logistical capacity for the installation and removal of signage for this prestigious event.
